As part of our ongoing series examining how people Get Red Cross Ready, I want to show you two bloggers who have recently taken it upon themselves to get prepared.
A certain Bustopher Jones is expecting a baby. As part of her nesting instincts, she’s done the following:
Another nesting thing I’ve done in the past month and a half is to create two disaster bins in case there’s an earthquake. I’ve spent a lot of time running errands to buy things for my disaster bins. […]I also have a Red Cross disaster backpack in the car, a flashlight by the end and extra batteries for the flashlights in the kitchen. And a new fire extinguisher.
Silicon Valley Moms Blog is running a series of her own, although she admits that despite her enthusiastic blogging she doesn’t have a number of the items on her own list:
OK, so now we’ve covered why we should be prepared and how to make a plan. I’ve also compiled a lot of information over the past several years on what to put in an emergency preparedness kit, so this list is extensive - you can pick and choose which items you feel are really necessary for your family, but this includes items to protect you from everything from Avian flu to nuclear fallout. (No, don’t come knocking on my door - our family doesn’t have even half of what’s on this list!)
We applaud these ladies for taking steps to get their families prepared. Congratulations! If YOU are taking your own steps, please let us know in the comments.

A lot of us out here in CA are getting our acts together as a result of a recent earthquake. Thanks for the link to SVMoms - I’m one of 25 or so xontributors & I offered to write the recent series on emergency preparedness - we’re trying to get the word out. The list I compiled is incredibly long and I don’t think every family necessarily needs everything on it, but I also tried to emphasize that there’s more to planning than just having supplies ready - organizing it all, an evac plan and preparing drills are part of it too.
