Disaster Response: Massive response effort underway

June 12th, 2008 · No Comments

Please visit our Online Newsroom for up-to-date info on the Red Cross response to the flooding and tornadoes throughout the central United States.

From public affairs team member Joseph Hansen on the ground in Iowa (this is an email he sent back to his chapter in Florida upon arriving yesterday):

After a long travel day and a lot of unknowns I spent the night in Des Moines Iowa.

I am watching the morning news and it is unbelievable. People have been sandbagging for days and expect another 10+ inches of rain in the coming days, unimaginable. You could even see the damage coming into the airport last night, roads just disappeared into the swollen rivers and ponds.

Here in Des Moines they had to release a spillway now the water is flowing down the river raising the height by 2/3 of an inch per hour. I actually watched them open the spillway live last night on TV.

Today I will be heading up to Northern Iowa University in Cedar Falls, we will be staying in dorms on their campus. They ordered 20,000 more people evacuated, this diaster isn’t even close to over. I am glad to be here and doing my part the help the Iowans, just like they came to help us Floridians during the 2004 and 2005 hurricane seasons.
