Georgia and the Role of the Red Cross

August 12th, 2008 · No Comments

You’ve probably heard about the recent conflict in Georgia and you may have wondered about the role of the Red Cross.

Before we get into that, it’s important to understand the relationship between the various parts of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.

The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is made up of 186 national societies - like the American Red Cross - that respond to humanitarian needs after disasters.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) provides responses to humanitarian needs in conflict zones.

Because they work in conflict zones, the ICRC will be the part of the Red Cross Movement that comes to the aid of those injured or displaced in Georgia. They are currently preparing to fly in:

  • 15 tons of medicine and medical supplies
  • material for a water treatment plant and distribution tanks to provide water for 20,000.
