Donate $5: Text “Give” to “2HELP”
-Post by Eric Porterfield, International Press Officer
You might have heard about this new text fundraising campaign in the news or read about it on our online newsroom for Hurricane Gustav. It was such an innovative idea that I thought I would try it myself.
First of all, your cell phone has to be with one of the following wireless carriers: AT&T, Alltel, Sprint, T-Mobile USA or Verizon Wireless.
As you can see from my phone above, you text the word “GIVE” to “2HELP” (2-4357) and magically you donate $5 to the American Red Cross so that we can help people affected by disasters, such as Hurricane Gustav.
Within seconds of sending my text, I received this message thanking me for my donation. While I don’t think my grandparents would like donating this way (especially since they don’t know how to text!) it was definitely a cool way to give and help a good cause.
Thanks to my colleague Jason Broaddus for taking the photos!
