This map breaks down by state the home fires the American Red Cross responded to between July 1, 2007 and June 30, 2008.
The total number of house fires = 65,391
Find your state, click on the fire icon, and add your story to the map (email Wendy Harman, HarmanW@usa.redcross.org, to become a collaborator).
Of all the major disasters the Red Cross responds to, stories about families surviving home fires affect me the most.
I guess because I have the sense that victims of fires mostly have to go through their life-changing event alone.
When a hurricane hits, it hits a whole community and lots of attention and resources become available to those who have lost their homes (still no picnic!). When a house or apartment burns down, there’s much less community mobilization - it’s an event that happens one at a time, all over the country, thousands and thousands of times every year.
Today starts Fire Prevention Week. It’s easy to take a few minutes to prepare for a fire in your home.
In the meantime, if you’ve been affected by a fire, please add your story to this map.
