Hurricane Ike: One Month (and a day) Later

One month ago yesterday Hurricane Ike made landfall in Texas and became the 3rd costliest US hurricane of all time (according to Wikipedia – behind Hurricane Andrew and Hurricane Katrina).

Several bloggers have marked the occasion:

Texas Bug says:

So it was one month ago today that Ike came ashore. Feels like a year. Here’s what we know now that we didn’t know a month ago today: […]10. My kids now look forward to the Red Cross truck coming down our street so they can get snacks like pudding and cookies.

One month later, the Red Cross still has 5 shelters open with about 800 residents.

  1. The Red Cross presence in Galveston has been incredible. Even though we haven’t needed the food, it has been so comforting to hear the truck come by twice a day, just in case we ever do. We’ve gotten to know the workers on “our” truck and they are so kind and compassionate. After giving to the Red Cross after every other disaster, it’s enlightening to be on the receiving end. Keep up the fantastic work!!
