H1N1 Poll Results

Today, the Red Cross released results from a new poll focused on the H1N1 virus and taking precautions during flu season. There were some very interesting results! Take a look at these highlights:

There were significant differences in how men and women have reacted to the threat of the H1N1 flu.

  • 83% of women surveyed responded that they made an extra effort to cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue, compared to 67% of men.
  • 35%of women surveyed have gotten their seasonal flu shots this year, compared to 26% of men.
  • Women are more concerned than men about the safety of the H1N1 vaccine: 60% of women expressed concerns about it, compared to 44% of men.

People turned to traditional media more often for info on the new flu.

  • 80% and 57% of respondents got info from TV and newspapers, respectively. Compare this to 21% who got info from blogs and websites, and only 11% from social networking sites.

In the past two months, one in five households has someone who has gone to work or school when they were sick.

Flu preparedness is a major issue right now, and we have many resources available for anyone seeking guidance and answers. Check out these videos we’ve posted before featuring Sharon Stanley, American Red Cross Chief Nurse, talking about the flu vaccine and flu preparedness.

Additionally, here are some tips on taking care of someone with the flu:

  • Disinfect door knobs, switches, handles, toys and other surfaces that everyone touches.
  • Use detergent and very hot water to do dishes and wash clothes. It’s okay to wash everyone’s dishes and clothes together. Wash your hands after handling dirty laundry.
  • Designate only one adult as the caregiver. People at increased risk of severe illness from the flu should not be caregivers.
  • Deal with crisis situations calmly and confidently to give the best support to the person being cared for.
  • Remember your own needs as well.
  • Practice healthy habits. Eat a balanced diet. Drink plenty of water. Get regular exercise.
  • Get enough sleep and rest.

Stay healthy, everyone!
