Update from the Ground: Haiti Earthquake

Below are two video updates from American Red Cross Emergency Response Unit team members on the ground in Haiti. Watch to get a sense of how distribution at camp sites is assessed and carried out.

The Red Cross is focusing on three areas – food, clean drinking water and other relief items such as hygiene kits, blankets, tarps, sleeping mats, tents and water containers. The relief items are helping more than 10,000 families (50,000 people) to date – with plans to increase this number. About 79 percent of the funds spent or committed by the American Red Cross have been for food and water; 18 percent have been for shelter; and the rest have been for health and family services.

  1. I am surprised to hear on the news over the past two weeks, that they are still showin people not receiving food, water or medical assistance in areas of Haiti. The people on the news say they can’t get to certain areas, however then they show church groups in these same areas with supplies. I have been watching and seeing the millions of dollars being donated and just can’t believe that some of these people are going two weeks now with no food, water or medical service. I thought we were the ones in charge there at the airport and organizing the help. Am I wrong??

  2. why are you purchasing toyota’s for the relief effort? American Red Cross or International Red Cross wherem are the funds coming from?

the crises, No one is in charge, really

  5. Thanks! you helped me get great information for my school newspaper!

  6. Hi,

Our school is participating in a fund raiser that will donate to the American Red Cross relief efforts in Haiti. My second period class has already donated around $50 this week. We look forward to updates from the Red Cross on how these funds will be used to help the Haitians recover from the devestating disaster.

  7. Women in Business Networking is an organization located in the Dayton, Ohio area. WiBN has pledged 10 cents for every dollar donated to the American Red Cross.

I challenge ALL organizations small or large to incorporate this opportunity for members of your organization to give. When people join together to do something good, greatness is often the result.
