Our President and CEO Gail McGovern is visiting Haiti for the second time since the earthquake. See what she has to say in this video update:

  1. I gave money to the Red Cross for use in Haiti after the devastating earthquake on January 12. I have been told that the Red Cross collected $255 million and has given Haiti only $80 million of that money.

CEO Gail McGovern stated in her blog that the Red Cross will use the money well. Please confirm how much money the Red Cross collected for Haiti and how much Haiti received. I need transparency from the Red Cross.

  2. I was in Haiti for 6 weeks and got a hand crushed repairing a well in Carefour Lamentin54 Grace International medical Inc.
Our compound became home for 15-17000 people.
When I left last week I thought the food pipeline was flowing through WFP via ADRA whoever we aren’t getting enough food.
Can you help with food? I am going down on the 16th and will contact you there.
We were also distributing to the neighborhood twice a week and that is to 110,000 people .
We have 2 trucks that we can haul some of the food.

    My Hatian # is 509 3880 6753
    MY HOME # IS 506 272 2046

    THANKS FOR YOUR HELP
    Luke

  3. I am all for lending a hand when someone else is in need, especially an impoverished coutry such as Haiti, but when PSE&G cannot get the power on after a storm in the North East I think the CEO should be working on troubleshooting those areas before globetrotting for the sake of good publicity.

I lost my power on Sat (3/13) I am expected to get it on by Thursday (3/18). This to me is an unacceptable response.
Let’s see how “caring” Ms McGovern is to my bill…..

  4. Hi Patti –
Sorry your power is out. I know that’s a frustrating thing to have happen.

We can do more than one thing at a time here at the American Red Cross – we’ve built this big network over so many years just so that we can. Unfortunately, we’re not in charge of the electricity where you live, but we can provide services.

I encourage you to call your local chapter to find out where local shelters and services are. I can tell you from here (headquarters) that we housed 1,000 people in the northeast last night. You can find your local chapter by visiting http://www.redcross.org and entering your zip code on the right side of the page.

  5. Luke – I will pass this information on to our Haiti team.

  6. Morenike – I am glad to answer this question here. We have so far allocated or spent over $100 million of the $354 million (as of 5:00 p.m. 03/09/10). The so far part is the most important. We know it will take a long time to help Haiti get on its feet, so while we have spent $100 million on immediate relief, we will spend every cent of the $354 million donated to Haiti in Haiti.

While we are still providing immediate relief, we have experts strategically analyzing the best way to help Haitians in the long term. So far we know that we’ll concentrate on shelter, disease prevention, h2o sanitation, disaster preparedness, and livelihood restoration.

We will continue to update you as this operation progresses. You can always check in here or visit http://www.redcross.org/haiti.

  7. I’ve been advised by many folks to contact the International Red Cross about shelter for Haiti. I’m with a new company in Spokane that has developed a framing system for housing that is highly resistant to natural calamities, and can be erected by layperson’s very quickly. Our building system has resulted from 10 years of R&D here in Spokane. I ask that our information be shared with the International Red Cross in Haiti: please visit our web site: http://www.habitek.biz — and see our press release on Haiti. Thank you. Keep up the good work in Haiti.
ps: I see the link above to “redcross.org/haiti” — I will visit the site now.

  8. People are tired of hearing about Haiti. It is a quairmire of failure, crime, lawlessness, diease ridden place, that will never be what all the bleeding hearts would like it to be. The liberals will not be happy until all the Hatians are us citizens. U NEED TO HELP PEOPLE IN THE USA. Haiti is not worth helping.

  9. I was in Port Au Prince doing relief work but did not see any American Red Cross there. We were all over the city and into Larmadell. I did see one Spanish Red Cross truck. I am wondering exactly what the Red Cross is doing in Haiti and how they are helping. Many people have asked me since I’ve been back (arrived back in the states on March 6th) if I have seen the ARC. I was told by an ARC leader in the chicago area that they would not send her and that the ARC was pulling out of Haiti because it was too dangerous. This was mid February. I did see many UN patrols and Military. Also I was told that much of our military is pulling out also. Can you comment on this?

  10. Hi Jennifer –
Here’s a map of where we are and the services we’re providing. We are there and we are not leaving anytime soon. http://www.redcross.org/haiti
