Heat vs Thunder: How to stay safe during the playoffs

This post came from our friends in the Eastern Massachusetts Chapter…they might be bitter that the Celtics lost, and they’re not holding back on how they feel about LeBron…

Granted, we’d rather be talking about what provisions you need on hand for a four-game sweep by the Boston Celtics, but part of being around disasters is knowing when to move on.

What we currently have in the NBA is a Heat vs Thunder situation.

From RedCross.org: Lightning Safety Week is being observed from June 19 through the 25 to educate people about the dangers associated with lightning strikes, and the American Red Cross wants you to know what you should do to stay safe “When Thunder Roars”.

Problems you could be facing with an extreme Thunder situation:

> Storms moving from West (Seattle) settling in the midwest (Oklahoma) can be surprisingly strong.

> No joke: According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), lightning injures an average of 300 people and causes about 80 fatalities each year. And where there’s Thunder, there’s lightning.

> There are separate protocols for aiding someone choking in the finals, (and many people have expressed sincere concern on Twitter for the choking hazards faced by NBA players). In case you’re wondering – this is how you should deal with a non-NBA choking situation.

Problems you could be facing with extreme Heat:

> Know the signs of Heat-related emergencies and monitor athletes closely.

> Use a buddy system when dealing with extreme Heat.

> Should Dwyane Wade develop from a weak front to a Flash, there are flooding precautions you can take. Remember, just six inches of moving water can sweep you off your feet — but you have to win 4-0 to sweep.

Disclaimer: OK, I’m making jokes about the NBA, but there are serious ways you can talk about heat-related injuries, why you should get somewhere safe in a lightning storm, and how a flood isn’t a joke. Check RedCross.org before tonight’s game.
