West Jefferson, NC, March 12, 1960 — People who “knew their mountains” acted as spotters aboard the Army helicopters that flew over the snow-locked area, aiding the Red Cross in the delivery of food and fuel. A spotter is watching out a window and directing a crewman who in turn directs the pilot into the “target.”
