“Modern Family” Earthquake Review

If you’ve been lucky enough to discover this year’s Best Comedy Emmy winner, you know laughter rumbles through the crowd for each episode of Modern Family. This week’s earthquake episode was no exception – though the title subject can be no laughing matter if you’re caught unprepared.

So how earthquake ready was America’s favorite kooky clan when the ground started to shake?

Mitchell, Cam and Lily aced their earthquake exam by quickly ducking under a nearby table. Kudos to them for remembering to “drop, cover and hold on”.

The Dunphy household was less prepared however, and Luke narrowly avoided earthquake injury when a cabinet Phil had neglected to anchor to the wall toppled over near him. In true know-it-all fashion, Alex earned some extra credit to salvage her family’s household response effort when she covered for her dad’s preparedness lapse. Her fib included some great post-earthquake safety reminders like checking gas lines and promptly cleaning up broken glass and other hazards.

As a reward for getting her father off the hook, Alex chose a trip to the Museum of Tolerance, which makes me wonder how she’d likely identify with the fundamental principles of the ICRC that include humanity and impartiality.  I think Alex may find her place in the Red Cross Youth movement.
