Fall is my favorite time of year. The leaves are changing color, apples are ripe for picking, and the smell of hot chocolate is in the air. But as a college student, fall comes with other unwanted side effects like allergies and the flu.
No one wants to get the flu. So how can you help avoid it?
At School
Whether a student is just starting elementary school or wrapping up college, it seems like the flu spreads like wildfire with everyone so close together. This is especially true for university students living in small dorm rooms with roommates.
I still remember my first time getting sick in college, and it was not fun (to put it lightly). Luckily, I included medicine and other items like tea and tissues on my dorm packing list.
So how do you help keep the flu at bay when you’re surrounded by people getting sick? Here are some things that I’ve learned:
- Wash your hands frequently throughout the day and be conscious of things that many people touch (like door handles or desks).
- Keep your belongings clean. Make sure to dust and disinfect surfaces in your dormitory, and do your laundry (yes, laundry!) to get rid of any bacteria in your living space.
- Get enough sleep and remember to eat healthy. As hard as this may seem with the college lifestyle, it’s important to take care of your mind and body to avoid getting sick.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth throughout the day to limit the chance of contracting germs.
At Work
The office is another place where the flu can spread quickly. From your personal space to the water cooler, here are a few tips to help avoid the flu at work:
- Keep a box of disinfecting wipes on your desk to clean your computer, mouse and desk.
- Drink lots of liquids. Bring tea or water to work to help reduce the chance of getting sick.
- Limit contact with sick coworkers. If you know the signs and symptoms of the flu, you can keep your distance from those who feel sick. Remember to stay home if you aren’t feeling well to avoid getting others sick.
- Bring healthy lunches and try to get outside as often as possible for some fresh air.
- Try not to touch your face throughout the day.
