Welcome to the Weekly Worldwide Wrap-Up, in which we consolidate the international Red Cross and Red Crescent news into one list of bite-sized links for you. It’s a non-comprehensive sampling of the larger and/or more intriguing aspects of our global work…
ITALY: Following a second major earthquake in northern Italy the Italian Red Cross, in close cooperation with civil protection authorities, has been hard at work undertaking relief and assistance work. Since the May 20th earthquake, the region has suffered over 800 aftershocks, and experts predict more to come. An estimated 15 people have been killed in this week’s quake and the shocks caused significant damage to buildings.
SYRIA: Following a high number of civilian casualties caused by the tragic events in al-Holeh, the ICRC remains extremely concerned about the humanitarian situation in Syria. In cooperation with the Syrian Arab Red Crescent, the ICRC is providing emergency relief throughout Syria. Since the beginning of the year it has brought aid to over 300,000 displaced people and others affected by the violence in the country.
MALI: In northern Mali, the situation of displaced people and residents is alarming due to increasing food insecurity and armed violence. The ICRC is working to distribute food to 23,000 displaced people in the Mopti area, provide fuel for generators that run water wells and treatment plants, assist farmers and livestock herders in addressing the hardship, and is facilitating the return home of detainees.
PHILIPPINES: Tuberculosis patients at Quezon City Jail in the Philippines now have access to proper treatment and monitoring of their condition at a newly renovated and expanded facility. Support for the infirmary, that can accommodate up to 60 patients, was provided by the ICRC which also facilitates the implementation of the National TB Control program in the jail.
