Text “Chile” to 90999: ACTIVATED

You can now text “Chile” to 90999 to donate $10 to survivors of the Chile earthquake.

Today the International Federation for the Red Cross/Red Crescent launched a preliminary $6.4 million emergency appeal for Chile, so we are now able to accept contributions designated for survivors of the February 27 earthquake.

We will also accept designated donations via

  • online gifts to redcross.org
  • toll-free calls to 1-800-RED CROSS
  • toll fee calls to 1-800-257-7575 to make a donation in Spanish

Thank you for your support of the operation in Chile, as well as our ongoing work in Haiti, which will continue for the long term.

  1. Why is Red Cross using the same text number for Haiti to now use for Chile? People are still using the 90999 number for Haiti. Are you now diverting the funds for Haiti to Chile??? The number should not be shut down for Haiti and diverted to Chile… Haiti has much more devistation then Chile.

  2. Hi Mary – Thanks for asking this question. Gives us a chance to clear it up for everyone.

While the number you text to – 90999 – is the same for both earthquakes, you can choose which designation to make.

To give to Haiti, you text the word Haiti to 90999 and for Chile you text the word Chile to 90999. That way we can keep track of which fund to add your donation to.

We will not divert any money given to Haiti to Chile or vice versa.

  3. Thank you so much for doing this! I am from Chile and do not wish any funds to be diverted from Haiti. There are many people hurting in Chile without food shelter or water! The tsunamis and quake were devastating to many people, no need for comparisons, we just need to help as many people as we can. GRACIAS!

  4. good morning.i’d have a question..for italian people, who wants to make tath donation without a credit card…where or to whom, can we turn?
    thank you.

  5. I’ve always wanted to know what percentage of the money raised through this mechanism goes to the relief effort vs administration vs the cost associated with the fund raising itself

  6. Hi Ky – 91 cents of every dollar is spent directly on relief effort. 9 cents on keeping the lights on.
