I am delighted to wish the American Red Cross a Happy Birthday as it celebrates its 130th anniversary!
Back in the Middle Ages – the period I write about – there was no organization like the Red Cross to help those who suffered disasters, natural or otherwise. But ever since Clara Barton founded the American Red Cross in 1881, this great humanitarian organization has been there for us in war time and every kind of national emergency. They supply blood, tissue and plasma; they support medical research; they help military families. None of us knows when the next national disaster will strike. But we do know that each and every one of us, wherever we are, whoever we are, can count on you, the American Red Cross.
Thank you, President Gail McGovern, supporters everywhere, and the amazing volunteers of the Red Cross.
You’re the Good Samaritan writ large. You’re what America is about.
